JOB TITLE: Pool Registered Nurse – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

REPORTS TO: Manager COST CENTER: 3270

JOB SUMMARY: Manages critically ill neonates. Maintains care relative to each patient’s age, development, prescribed treatment and other identified needs. Practice is under the general supervision of the NICU Nurse Manager, Director and Medical Director. Is required to assess the high risk infants in conjunction with the MD to establish and deliver patient care for the level II and level III neonate.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for tracking and evaluating patient physical assessment and laboratory parameters.
  2. Manages patient care through evaluation, action and decision to minimize patient compromise, using highly technical equipment and monitoring devices; arterial and venous lines, ventilators, central lines.
  3. Maintains readiness of emergency equipment and supplies in the NICU, stabilization area, and neonatal transport unit.
  4. Attends high risk deliveries, cesarean sections and transports both in house and out of house. During this time provides airway management, monitoring vital signs, and administration of prescribed medications and IV fluids for the compromised neonate.
  5. Documents assessment, treatments, lab, and progress in relation to daily goals in the patient’s record.
  6. Maintains knowledge of current trends and techniques in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending seminars, conferences and the like.

Certifications:

  • BLS certification required
  • NRP certification required
  • S.T.A.B.L.E certification required

PRN REQUIREMENTS

The Unit Based PRN employee agrees to work three (3) shifts per monthly schedule, and, agrees to work one (1) weekend shift per month in departments that provide weekend services. Employee should not work more than 2 shifts per week for any extended period of time. PRN employees shall not work greater than an average of 29 hours per week, as monitored over a measurable year.

Two (2) holidays must be worked per year in departments that provide holiday services.


Employees agree to work one (1) holiday per year if required and may rotate between minor and major holidays with the full time staff, depending on the needs of the unit(s)

The employee understands there are no regular cycle of work and no guarantee of shifts.

The employee understands that if unable to show for a shift, it will be considered an absence and that if they do not call in, the absence will be recorded as a “no call/no show.”

PRN employees are to receive the same performance evaluations as Full time or Part time employees. This position is not eligible for any merit increase.

All mandatory in-services must be attended and all credentials maintained. Must attend 25% of department staff meetings and 1 out of the 4 quarterly Town Hall Meetings.

Circumstances may arise that require the department to temporarily reassign or float the employee to another Unit/Department. If the employee is assigned to work outside their usual area, the employee will float to areas where they are clinically competent and have successfully completed skills validations for that area.

The employee will only be assigned to perform duties/tasks within their scope and competency.

The employee agrees to follow all established Unit/Department specific and Hospital guidelines as outlined.

If the Unit Based PRN Employee fails to meet the above stated criteria, or does not work required shifts during an 8 week period they will be terminated. Hours worked will be reviewed regularly by Human Resources to ensure PRN commitment is maintained.
