Under supervision and direction of the Clinical Nurse and according to established procedures, provides routine service duties, technical and nursing procedures necessary to provide for care, comfort and safety of patients. Performs tasks, assists patients with personal hygiene and meals and ambulates patients according to specific procedures. Maintains patient and unit environment in a clean and orderly condition. Utilizes basic knowledge of age related differences in delivering patient care.

On adult units, care for patients age 14-108 years: 8M, 6M, 5M, SNF, Rehab, Women Surgical Unit, ICU

In Day Surgery, Operative Services, Emergency Department, and Post Anesthesia Care – Newborn to 108 years

In Neonatal Intensive Care – Neonates of premature age to 6 months

In Family Birth Center – Babies of age birth to 1week

In Endoscopy - Adolescent-108 years


  1. Consistently supports the hospital’s Spirit of Serving Standards, in line with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.

2. Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).

3. Promotes a culture of safety for patients and Associates through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.

4. Participates in education and quality improvement activities.

5. Provides for care, comfort and safety of assigned patients. Participates in plan of care for patient assignment as directed by clinical nurse. Follows policies and procedures established by hospital. Responds to patient call lights to determine needs and relays information to nursing personnel. Distributes patient trays and nourishments, assists patients with feeding and collects trays at end of meal. Completes various errands as requested, such as retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results and so forth.

6. Accurately documents basic procedures and treatments in patient’s chart.

7. Recognizes age related needs, sensory, and cultural considerations and adjusts care to reflect patient needs and preferences.

8. Maintains patient and physical environment in a clean and orderly condition. Assists in transferring patients, beds and patient care equipment to other rooms, using necessary safety precautions.

9. Participates in measures to prevent in exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable pathogens.

10. Supportive of the compliance program set forth by IASIS and demonstrated by:

  1. Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
  2. Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.
  3. Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Regional Compliance & Safety Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.

11. Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.



  • Approximately six months on the job experience preferred, in order to gain knowledge of basic patient care methods, procedures and techniques, and to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit procedures and schedules.
  • New recipients of Certified Nurses Aide (CNA) certification will be considered.
  • Individuals who were licensed to practice nursing in a foreign country will be considered.


  • Current Nurse’s Aide Certification required.
  • Texas Department of Health Bureau of Long Term Care standards and pending successful completion of examination process.
  • Evidence of completion of nursing training in a foreign country and work history as licensed nurse in a foreign country may be substituted for nurse aide certification.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required


  • High School Diploma or equivalent


  • Ability to read in order to interpret type and level of patient care ordered, to write in order to record patient vital signs, to understand and follow instructions relating to basic patient care,
  • Perform simple arithmetic calculations in order to take and record patients’ weight and vital signs at a level normally acquired through the completion of a high school diploma or equivalent training program.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively and cordially interact with patients, Visitors, and physicians in a courteous manner.
  • Ability to complete simple comparisons between numbers when taking patients’ vita signs and weight and to record routine information on patient charts.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for unto twenty percent of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
  • Ability to walk and stand for up to ninety percent of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
