JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Director, renders professional nursing care and guidance to other staff in accordance with physician’s treatment plans and standards of practice/care in order to provide for the comfort and well-being of patients. Represent leadership to ensure quality patient care is consistent with St. Joseph Medical Center goals and objectives, and is provided according to various regulatory Agency Standards. Maintains staffing congruent with a described delivery system reflective of patient needs.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Responsible for supervising, directly subordinate Allied Health Professionals, Clinical Nurses and non-exempt technical and support personnel.

  • Assists Director with personnel in assigned unit to ensure provision of effective, efficient and safe nursing care in accordance with established standards, using nursing process to provide all levels of patient care.
  • Renders professional nursing care
  • Performs both complex and routine treatments
  • Institutes appropriate nursing interventions
  • Oversees nursing staff in planning, implementing and evaluating
  • Utilizes knowledge and skills of unit and department resource personnel in planning and implementing care, and resolving complex patient care problems.
  • Assists Medical staff in communicating issues and coordinating patient care.
  • Communicates with other Hospital departments, as necessary, in order to resolve operational problems and make most effective use of Hospital resources in delivering quality patient care.
  • Reviews staff abilities and makes staff assignments based patient care needs and acuity
  • Charge nurse may determine tasks to be performed by each staff member during the shift and has responsibility to take corrective action when necessary to address or prevent adverse consequences, to include all levels of disciplinary action or assignment changes.
  • Demonstrates use of critical thinking skills in managing a patient crisis/emergency to prevent deterioration of a patient’s status.
  • Initiate accurate and ongoing assessment of physical, psychological and social needs of patients.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other medical staff to identify the medical management, patient goals and nursing intervention required.
  • Consults with staffing office, house supervisor, and other department points of contact to provide interdisciplinary approach to meet patient needs.
  • Manages bed control on the unit.
  • Communicates with intake the discharges and bed availability in timely manner.
  • Serves a resource to hospital staff and may provide training and/or orientation.

CERTIFICATIONS

CURRENT TEXAS RN LICENSE

5 YRS EMERGENCY SERVICES RN EXPERIENCE

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS)

REQUIRED prior to patient care

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

REQUIRED prior to patient care

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

REQUIRED prior to patient care

National Institute of Healthcare Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certifications

REQUIRED 90 days after Date of Hire

Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

REQUIRED 90 days after Date of Hire
