Sitter- Psych Units ; 7p-7a; Night Shift
ALL Sitters will adhere to the following Expectations and Responsibilities PRIOR to assuming patient care. Failure to adhere to the following will result in the loss of privilege to work as a Sitter on a unit.
The Sitter will:
- Perform duties in accordance with the policies and guidelines of St. Joseph Medical Center.
- Receive report from off-going Sitter and RN.
- Provide for the patient’s hygiene, comfort and activities of daily living.
- Assist with baths.
- Take vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry).
- Monitor Intake and Output.
- Perform glucose checks.
- Assist the PCA, RN and MD with procedures as appropriate.
- Complete documentation as required for each patient.
- Report change in client status to RN and/or Charge Nurse.
- Perform all duties and requests promptly and professionally.
- Keep patient’s room neat and orderly including assisting with removal of trash from room.
- Offer and assist patients with snacks/nutrition as appropriate.
- Stay at patient’s side when patient must be transported out of department for procedure, etc.
- Acknowledge that leaving patient unattended is strictly prohibited.
- Acknowledge that sleeping while on duty is grounds for termination.
- Acknowledge that personal use of cell phone is prohibited.
- Acknowledge that personal laptop computers are prohibited.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Consistently supports the hospital’s Spirit of Serving Standards, in line with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
2. Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
3. Promotes a culture of safety for patients and Employees through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
4. Participates in education and quality improvement activities.
5. Provides for care, comfort and safety of assigned patients. Participates in plan of care for patient assignment as directed by clinical nurse. Follows policies and procedures established by hospital. Responds to patient call lights to determine needs and relays information to nursing personnel. Distributes patient trays and nourishments, assists patients with feeding and collects trays at end of meal. Completes various errands as requested, such as retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results and so forth.
6. Accurately documents basic procedures and treatments in patient’s chart.
7. Recognizes age related needs, sensory, and cultural considerations and adjusts care to reflect patient needs and preferences.
8. Maintains patient and physical environment in a clean and orderly condition. Assists in transferring patients, beds and patient care equipment to other rooms, using necessary safety precautions.
9. Participates in measures to prevent in exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable pathogens.
10. Supportive of the compliance program set forth by SJMC and demonstrated by:
- Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
- Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.
- Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Compliance Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.
11. Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
At least two years experienced working with mental health patients
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training Program) certification required within 30 days of hire
EDUCATION & TRAINING:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ability to read in order to interpret type and level of patient care ordered, to write in order to record patient vital signs, to understand and follow instructions relating to basic patient care,
- Perform simple arithmetic calculations in order to take and record patients’ weight and vital signs at a level normally acquired through the completion of a high school diploma or equivalent training program.
- Interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively and cordially interact with patients, Visitors, and physicians in a courteous manner.
- Ability to complete simple comparisons between numbers when taking patients’ vita signs and weight and to record routine information on patient charts.
- Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for unto twenty percent of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
- Ability to walk and stand for up to ninety percent of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
