Summary

Effectively synthesizes risk management events, reports, and insurance claims. Interfaces with internal and external clients to identify organizational vulnerabilities and intervene accordingly. Serves as a Risk Management representative capable of directing and advising internal and external clients in a manner consistent with the established risk management plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Service

Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.

Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance. Represents the Risk Department of SJMC in a positive and professional manner.

Develops, coordinates, and administers facility-wide risk identification, investigation, and risk reduction; maintains a network of information sources and experts; performs risk assessments and surveys assess loss potential. Works with insurance and claims management and occasional legal counsel formulating facility strategies.

People

Timely response to calls and event reports to identify organizational risk issues as expressed by departmental leaders, staff, physicians, insurers or other sources, and facilitate risk mitigation plan. Promote a culture of responsiveness and safety in the course of daily work. Informs department directors regarding occurrences, issues, findings, and risk management recommendations; provides feedback to directors in an effort to eliminate risks; assists department directors in designing risk management programs within their departments. Maintains a risk management education calendar.

Quality:

Review and analyze event reports to determine next steps and provide appropriate documentation of investigation steps, follow-up and closure. Identify system-issues and work collaboratively with physicians, administrators and staff to resolve. Gathers and analyzes pertinent information related to any safety event, and maintains departmental procedures. Proactive analysis of patient safety and medical errors processes. May have on-call responsibility if needed.

Strong oral and written communication skills to internal leaders, regulatory or payor sources including clear, concise and compassionate manner, ensuring grammatical accuracy and succinctness of thought and use of SBAR.

Adhere to regulatory guidelines with regard to patient privacy laws. Maintains confidentiality of all patient, hospital or physician information by using discretion when discussing patient matters and legal matters.

Provide staff and leadership updates on events and investigations using data analysis, trends, and other aggregated data as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Growth:

Fosters a positive relationship with internal and external customers and utilizes growth opportunities in the department as well as within the risk management field.

Support hospital initiatives by contributing to safety surveys and safety initiatives within the organization and within the industry by focusing on preventive solutions to reduce harm.

Cultivate systems and processes which support and illicit staff and patient feedback to improve and sustain safety measures. Participates in appropriate committees.

Periodic in-services and routine orientation may be conducted for employees, leaders, or medical staff regarding healthcare risk management principles and a culture of safety.

Finance:

Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality customer service and risk promotion.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

High School Diploma/ GED Required

Bachelor’s Degree Required

Minimum 3 years work experience in a hospital or healthcare setting. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook email, use of telephone with advanced clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills.

Able to effectively communicate in oral and written English language.

Able to effectively navigate the electronic health record.

PREFERRED

Bi or Multilingual

Prefer 1-3 years of experience in a clinical role

Prefer 1-3 years of experience in a hospital quality or risk management department.

Certified Patient Safety Specialist or other appropriate certification (within 12 months of hire)
