Summary

Develops tools, theories, skills and knowledge to advance the practice of

nursing and nurses within Nursing Professional Development. Conducts and

coordinates in-service and formal education programs spanning multiple

departments to enhance the skills of the Nursing Services Staff. Supports the

training and development of the Nursing Services staff at SJMC and serves as

education consultant for the Ancillary Services in SJMC. Provides leadership

in the work setting by serving in a variety of roles to support organizational

goals. Ensures the standards of Continuing Nursing Education Accredited

Provider Unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Service Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and

Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.

Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.

Serves as a change agent, assisting staff in understanding the

importance, necessity, impact, and process of change.

Prioritizes system knowledge gaps and addresses them promptly.

Forecasts potential knowledge gaps based on environmental

scanning (international, national, corporate, and local issues).

People Collaborates with inter and intraprofessional colleagues to ensure

quality outcomes.

Maintains visibility and open communication within the facility.

Conducts new-hire Patient Care Employee orientation program to

lead to successful integration of the employee in the organization

and effective job performance.

Conducts and coordinates annual competency assessment activities

that span multiple departments.

Formulates recommendations to improve nursing practice or

outcomes.

Assists in the design of methods to modify or eliminate barriers to

effective nursing care.

Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of

guidelines and procedures for nursing practice.

Conducts assessments, validates competency of new Patient Care

Employees related to technical skills, critical thinking,

interpersonal skills, and other related job skills.

Creates and sustains an effective Preceptor training program.

Assesses, addresses, records and tracks staff competence.

Fosters a proactive vs. reactive approach to problem identification

and resolution.

Actively participates on committees and task forces to meet goals.

Determines appropriate interventions as a result of differentiating

educational practice gaps from individual performance or system

issues.

Provides staff performance feedback to director

Ensures personnel management is consistent with state and federal

laws and facility policy and procedure.

Provides consultation to influence plans, enhance the abilities of

others and effect change

Quality:

Completes annual education requirements.

Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the

identification and reduction of unsafe practices.

Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk

assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.

Utilizes quality principles and concepts in the implementation of

system-wide programs and projects.

Advocates for patient rights while supporting regulatory standards.

Champions the reduction of hospital acquired conditions through

improved compliance with patient safety bundles and/or other

formal performance improvement programs.

Provides leadership by serving in the roles of Learning Facilitator,

Change Agent, Mentor, Leader, Champion for Scientific Inquiry,

Advocate for NPD Specialty, and partner for Practice Transitions

to promote the professional growth of peers and other staff.

Serves as a role model in support of clinical care, nursing process,

patient assessment, and continuum of care issues.

Participates in intra- and interdisciplinary teams that evaluate

professional development.

Provides guidance, resources, and knowledge for professional

growth of others.

Monitors and trends Performance Improvement activities and

makes suggestions for improvements as needed. Appropriately

involves the nursing staff in this process.

Oversees the systematic and purposeful collection of data,

information, knowledge and evidence. Synthesizes evidence

relevant to the situation to identify patterns.

Demonstrates expertise in clinical area of specialization with in

depth understanding of current scientific concepts, professional

practice standards, and relevant statutes and regulations.

Maintains continuing competency through self- evaluation,

participating in ongoing education activities related to practice

knowledge and professional issues, and seeking of experiences that

reflect current theories and methods of teaching, learning, and

delivery.

Practices in a manner that is sensitive to cultural diversity.

Formulates a system and effective evaluation plan aimed at

measuring professes and outcomes that are relevant to programs,

learners, and stakeholders.

Growth: Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of

practice, trends, and developments.

Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive

relationship with customers.

Contributes to improving HCAHPS results.

Evaluates diverse learning environments (such as virtual) and their

sustainability to the organization and target audience.

Finance: Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality

patient care.

Analyzes cost and anticipated return on investment for learning

activities, programs and projects.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to

engage in professional nursing

Five or more years of practice experience in a healthcare setting.

2 years experience with program development, group presentations, and project

management

Baccalaureate degree required. Must complete in 2 years if not held at the

time of appointment.

Nursing Professional Development certification is to be completed within two

years, if not held at the time of appointment.

Comprehensive knowledge of nursing procedures, processes, and acute care

organizations.

Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to

effectively and work collaboratively with the leadership team and staff.

Ability to prioritize work with minimal supervision, in order to independently

carry out the duties of the position.

Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support , ACLS, PALS & TNCC certification required.

Other certification requirements as defined by the certification policy.

Strong clinical, teaching, oral communication and education skills

Adept using Microsoft Office, online applications.

PREFERRED

Bi or Multilingual.

Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field
