JOB SUMMARY:

The incumbent will manage the staff activities involved in the assembly and distribution of case carts containing the consumable supplies and instrumentation needed for surgical procedures performed in the operating room and women’s center. Incumbent will also assist with purchasing surgical instruments, and equipment, and coordinate the repair of instruments and equipment. Reporting to the Director of Surgical Services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consistently supports the hospital’s Spirit of Serving Standards, in line with the Mission, Vision and values of St. Joseph Medical Center

Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI)

Promotes a culture of safety for patients and Associates through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.Coordinates activities related to the assembly of instrumentation.Evaluate and purchasing new instrumentation and equipment.

Assist with inventorying and ordering supplies.

Coordinate the repair/ refurbishment of surgical instruments.

Coordinates activities related to the assembly of case carts

Ensures that patient care equipment issued by the Sterile Processing Department is available by coordinating usage with Central Supply Supervisor.

Participates in educational activity as it relates to new employee orientation, and in services.Coordinates the teaching assignment of health care students

Ensures compliance with OSHA* AORN, JCAHO and any other regulatory organization

Ensures adherence to policies and procedures related to decontamination, sterilization, and other SPD processes

Ensures adherence to hospital policies and procedures.

Participates in a quality assurance program that measures departmental compliance to policies and procedures.

Coordinate the selection of assigned personnel, schedule work hours, make assignments evaluate performance, and make recommendations for merit increases, disciplinary actions and terminations.

Participates in infection control meetings and prepares reports for committee

Monitors and documents equipment failures and coordinate repairs with Clinical Engineering.

Monitors the API system and coordinates the monthly schedule of Sterile Processing employees.

Supportive of the compliance program set forth by SJMC and demonstrated by:

  1. Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
  2. Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.
  3. Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Compliance Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.

Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.

Supports, reviews, and understands JCAHO’s compliance activities and expectations. Ensures departmental compliance with JCAHO standards.

Performs physical environment duties, such as cleaning rooms pre and post procedure using appropriate disinfectants and sterilization machinery and methods. Arranges for more extensive clean up if needed, through Environmental Services.

Performs preoperative checkout procedures according to FDA recommendations on all anesthesia machines in the OR.Coordinates the repair of malfunctioning equipment with Clinical Engineering.

Preceptor

Coordinates all requirements for the Radiometer.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Minimum of 5 years experienced working with case carts, supplies, and instrumentation. Possesses knowledge of Q.I. & C.Q.I.

Education and Work Experience:

1. Ability to direct and monitor staff activities.

2. Ability to communicate with operating room staff about surgery schedule, instruments, and supplies.

3. Ability to use a computer.

4. In-depth knowledge of OSHA blood born pathogen.

5. Ability to establish a department Q.A. program.

6. Ability to write policies & procedures.

License/Registration/Certification:

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Registered Certified Surgical Technician (RCST)

Education & Training:

High school diploma

Central Service Technician course.

Skills:

1. Ability to coach and direct staff.

2. Ability to troubleshoot and make acceptable judgement decisions.

3. Ability to interface with OR Coordinators, Lead Technicians, and staff; to monitor and enhance quality patient outcome.

4. Ability to orientate new Associates and provide continuing education.
