Our Safe and Ready program consists of a rigorous [five-point] standard ensuring patient safety, confidence and convenience:
- Expanded hours will allow previously cancelled procedures to be scheduled as quickly as possible.
- Any COVID-19 related care takes place in designated areas away from other patients and their families.
- Emergency Departments are reorganized to be a safe place to treat all emergency patients.
- A stringent cleaning policy has been implemented throughout the hospital.
- A strictly controlled visitor and masking policy is required for patient safety.

The Infection Control Manager supports the department’s Director in planning, directing and executing activities of the infection control program. Responsible for monitoring and recognition of infectious processes, surveillance of the environment, providing education, assisting with performance improvement projects, regulatory reporting, trend analysis and monitoring for sentinel events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center. Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance. Collaborates in establishing, implementing and administering the infection control program throughout the facility and in developing the goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Collaborates in the development and revision of Infection Control guidelines and the periodic review of the Hospital’s overall compliance with established guidelines. Monitors the Hospital environment by conducting site inspections, for potential risk problems, and identifies outbreaks of health care acquired infections. Conducts daily surveillance for community or hospital acquired infections for appropriate actions, precautionary measures, and review. Reports the presence of communicable diseases to appropriate agencies as required by law in cooperation with attending physicians. Monitors for sentinel events related to all identified cases of unanticipated deaths or major permanent loss of function associated with health care associated infections.
Consistently follows patient care, and facility guidelines and procedures in performance. Collaborates with inter and intraprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes. Acts as consultant during times of emergency or bioterroism attacks relating to infectious diseases. Member of the Hospital Infection Control Committee and other committees as directed by the IC Director.
Completes annual education requirements. Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements. Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices. Uses professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize, and execute the patient’s plan of care consistent with patient assessment data, physicians’ treatment plans, and professional standards of care. Implements measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions. Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm. Uses appropriate methodologies for collection and analysis of infection control statistics. Collects and aggregates infection control data and ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of submission - externally for mandatory reporting and internally. Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities. Monitors areas of construction for adherence to Infection Control guidelines compliance. Other duties assigned.
Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments. Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers. Keep current with trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars and the like Contributes to improving patient satisfaction results.
Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care. Assists in promoting a safe patient care by eliminating hospital acquired infections that affects the hospital’s bottom line.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas or a degree in Microbiology or related science. Minimum of 2 years clinical Nursing or Microbiology experience and 2 years in Infection Control. Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care/area. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required. Other certification requirements as defined by the certification policy. Adept using Microsoft Office and online applications. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Bi or Multilingual. Completion of an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited school Nursing or a degree in Microbiology or related science. Certification in Infection Control or certification obtained within 2 years from date of hire
