Our Labor and Delivery is a 12 beds unit on the second floor of the Women’s Building. This unit provides comprehensive care of the pregnant patient and accepts admits from the ER, direct admits, Women and Children’s Clinic, EMS and walk-in. They care for patients that are preterm and term. Labor and Delivery assists with vaginal or cesarean deliveries, tubal, cerclages, versions, and any pregnancy related condition requiring treatment. Some conditions that may be treated on this unit are PIH, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, and obstetrical emergencies. Labor and Delivery currently staffs at a 1:1 to 1:2 patient ratio depending on acuity. Triage is also housed on Labor and Delivery. This is the area where patients are monitor and it is determined if they will be admitted to the hospital or discharged home.

St. Joseph Medical Center is taking additional, necessary preparations to ensure patients can receive compassionate care in a safe, carefully managed environment – with confidence and without fear.

Our Safe and Ready program consists of a rigorous [five-point] standard ensuring patient safety, confidence and convenience:

  • Expanded hours will allow previously cancelled procedures to be scheduled as quickly as possible.
  • Any COVID-19 related care takes place in designated areas away from other patients and their families.
  • Emergency Departments are reorganized to be a safe place to treat all emergency patients.
  • A stringent cleaning policy has been implemented throughout the hospital.
  • A strictly controlled visitor and masking policy is required for patient safety.

Summary:

Accountable for the observation, assessment, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, or health teachings of a person who is ill, injured, infirm, or experiencing a change in normal health processes; the maintenance of health or prevention of illness; the administration of a medication or treatment as ordered by a physician, the supervision or teaching of nursing; the administration, supervision, and evaluation of nursing practices, policies, and procedures; the performance of an act delegated by a physician and the development of the nursing care plan.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing.

Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care/area.

Certification requirements as defined by the certification policy.

Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

PREFERRED

Baccalaureate degree or progression to this degree.

National Certification as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Minimum of 1-2 years Labor & Delivery experienced in an acute care facility.
