Responsible for abstracting and coding medical data through application of appropriate and ethical coding principles in accordance with Corporate Compliance and facility coding policies. Participates in problem solving account issues related to both ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT-4 coding assignments as assigned by the Coding Manager. Primarily responsible for coding Inpatient and Observation medical records. Codes Day Surgery, ED and ancillary medical records based on education and training.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Work Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years of employment as an acute care hospital based coder with demonstrated proficiency and accuracy in code assignment for all patient types (i.e., inpatient, outpatient surgery, ancillary clinics, general and interventional radiology, emergency, laboratory, heart catheterization). Experience working with an electronic medical record system.
License/Registration/Certification: RHIT/RHIA and/or CCS preferred.
Education & Training:
Two year degree from an accredited college or university required preferred.
Skills: Score above average level on coding skills assessment indicating advanced coding knowledge, skills and abilities for both ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT-4. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Advanced level knowledge of medical terminology and medical science, and anatomy and physiology with laboratory correlation. Proficient data entry experience with facility abstracting and encoder software preferred. Data correction experience with facility patient accounting system preferred. Basic computer skills (i.e., use of email, create a file, save a file) required.
