JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nutritional Services, plans, directs, and provides nutritional care to patients, adhering to established guidelines of the department, medical staff, and regulatory agencies. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Service

  • Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
  • Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
  • Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment
  • Works to ensure compliance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Assigned tasks and projects.

People

  • Consistently follows facility guidelines and procedures in performance.

Leadership:

  • Represents St. Joseph Medical Center and the individual facility professionally and ethically at all times.
  • Provides advice on clinical related issues at departmental and inter-departmental committees/meetings.

  • Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
  • Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Works to ensure compliance with regulatory food safety, nutritional care management, HACCP 7 Steps, State and Accrediting Body Standards.

Client/Customer Relations:

  • Effectively communicates with nursing, medical, and other facility staff to ensure achievement of department goals.
  • Conducts periodic patient rounds to determine adequacy of nutritional intake and to assess adequacy/acceptability of meals/interactions.
  • Manages implementation of St. Joseph Medical Center client/patient related programs.
  • Coordinates and conducts periodic tray assessments according to quality standards and diet prescription.
  • Recommend appropriate patient satisfaction programs.
  • Coordinates collection of data pertaining to patient satisfaction (surveys)

Quality Assessment and Improvement:

  • Directs the nutritional care of patients on assigned units
  • Counsels patient and families on nutritional modifications
  • Establishes assigned quality assurance monitors and thresholds
  • Tracks quality assurance indicators and action plans
  • Assists in development of departmental standards of nutritional care
  • Promotes departmental and St. Joseph Medical Center quality standards.
  • Maintains accurate records/documentation of patient care.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area, personal hygiene, dress code compliance, safe work habits.

  • Supportive of the compliance program set forth by SJMC and demonstrated by:
  • Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
  • Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.
  • Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Compliance Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Coordinated Undergraduate Program or Dietetic Internship and/or hospital experience. Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to understand and utilize currently acceptable standards in the area of clinical and managerial dietetics. Employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care or support based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area, as defined in this job description/performance evaluation

LICENSE REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

Registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)

Licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Institutional Management or Foods and Nutrition

SKILLS:

Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, patients and families

Ability to prioritize work with minimal supervision, in order to independently carry out the duties of the position

Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Basic computer knowledge

Other certification requirements as defined by the certification policy.

PREFERRED

Bi or Multilingual

Hospital experience - 1 year in clinical area

Master's degree or advanced degree program
